Closed session with restricted participation
Digitalisation has created the right technological conditions for the development of connected and autonomous driving. This revolution under way will have impacts not only on safety and traffic management, but also, more widely, on mobility behaviour, modal choice, the environment, employment, social inclusion -including in rural areas- and in responding to the emerging needs of an ageing society.
The development of connected and autonomous driving will, in turn, generate an increasing amount of data. This is providing greater quantities and quality of the data available for transport planning and management, as well as for new services to transport users, including under innovative business models. Vast amounts of data will be collected through sensors both in vehicles and in the infrastructure. Much of this data is geo-localised and the protection of privacy is therefore a key issue. The advent of autonomous vehicles also raises issues of liability for potential crashes and malfunctions, and new approaches for responsibility in the case of accident will have to be developed.
The objective of this Roundtable is to enable Ministers and sector leaders to explore key policy issues raised by technological developments of autonomous and connected driving, with a focus on big data and digitalised infrastructure, and to discuss transport authorities’ readiness to anticipate and accommodate these challenges in their core regulatory and policy making functions and make full use of the potential socio-economic benefits by addressing the following issues:
