A new door to the world - built in record time
The story reads like a modern fairytale. Two million square metres of empty land near the gates of Leipzig has been turned into the ultimate, state-of-the-art airfreight hub Europe has ever seen and thousands of new jobs have been created - all within a space of less than three years.
Officially opened for operations in May 2008, the DHL facility in Leipzig is DHL’s European hub, and offers a myriad of direct connections to the growth markets in Eastern Europe and Asia. DHL invested a total of EUR 300 million in its construction and the total surface area for buildings and planes is approximately 200 hectares. In addition to the distribution centre, also known as the warehouse, and the hangar, the airfreight hub also comprises the apron, the tank station and the administration building.
The DHL Hub in Leipzig is an excellent example of logistics in action, with facilities that consider environmental and sustainability aspects. Approximately 60 aircrafts take off and land each night. Up to 1900 tons of parcels and documents are sorted and forwarded within a few hours’ time to every corner of the globe.
On the tour, Summit participants will see first-hand this state-of-the-art airfreight hub operating during peak hour conditions.
